Sickhead collaborated with Red Hook Studios on the console debut of Darkest Dungeon, porting it to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita with a simultaneous release on September 27, 2016. Darkest Dungeon is a gothic roguelike RPG that puts players in command of a rotating roster of flawed heroes delving into procedurally generated dungeons beneath a crumbling ancestral estate, battling not just monsters, but stress, madness, and permadeath. The game had built a devoted following through a year of PC Early Access before its full launch, and bringing it to console meant delivering a complete, polished experience to an audience that had been waiting. Shipping both the PS4 and Vita versions simultaneously meant running two separate Sony certification pipelines in parallel, each with its own hardware constraints and submission requirements. The Vita port in particular demanded careful optimization: the game’s simulation layer, which tracks stress levels, quirks, diseases, and persistent roster state across a full campaign, needed to run reliably on constrained handheld hardware without compromising the depth that made the game what it is. The PS4 and PS Vita versions also launched with cross-buy support, meaning both versions had to be held to the same standard of quality; players picking it up on PS4 were getting the Vita version too.
