Enclave HD brings Starbreeze’s cult medieval action game back to consoles for the first time in over a decade, and to PlayStation for the first time ever. It keeps the dual Light and Dark campaigns set during the great war of Celenheim, now enhanced for modern hardware.
Enclave was built on the proprietary Ogier engine, which supported consoles of its era but was designed around hardware several generations old. We received the codebase as a bare archive with no documentation. Before any porting could begin, we had to do some code archaeology to rediscover how the engine, editors, and tools worked and get everything building again.
Rather than rewriting the renderer for each platform, we built a DirectX 8 compatibility layer. The original game code talks to it largely unchanged, and native backends for each console sit underneath. This preserved the original gameplay while letting us target four platforms from a single codebase. We recreated the original assembly shaders with enhancements for modern GPUs, and our technical art team upscaled the game’s textures, lighting, and video cutscenes.
Enclave HD launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on June 29, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version followed later that year.
