Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a physics-based adventure from Young Horses where you play an octopus masquerading as a human father, stumbling through everyday tasks while keeping his true nature hidden. It’s a comedy game, but the comedy is entirely load-bearing — it lives or dies on the physics simulation feeling genuinely unpredictable at all times. Sickhead handled the PS Vita port, shipping in May 2015.

The Irrlicht engine wasn’t built with the Vita in mind, and Octodad’s physics model is not a lightweight one. The game’s core mechanic depends on real-time ragdoll simulation across multiple limbs simultaneously, all feeding into analog stick input that is intentionally imprecise. On PC or PS4 that’s manageable. On the Vita, you’re working with a 4-core ARM Cortex-A9 and 512MB of RAM shared between the CPU and GPU, and you need that simulation running consistently enough that the chaos feels intentional rather than like framedrops. The port also had to support local co-op, where two players split control of the same physics object ( one on the legs, one on the arms) which introduced its own input handling complexity on top of an already constrained system. Getting all of that running cleanly on Vita hardware, without gutting what makes the game work, was no small task.
