Prodeus is a first-person shooter from Bounding Box Software, a studio founded by two Raven Software veterans. It blends modern rendering with the feel and structure of classic 1990s shooters like Doom and Quake. The pitch is simple: old-school movement, pacing, and level design, running on a modern engine with dynamic lighting, particle effects, and a full gore system. Players can even apply effects that simulate resolutions as low as 216p, leaning hard into the retro aesthetic.
The game was built in Unity with extensive custom shader work, Photon networking, and custom servers for sharing user-generated community maps. We solved memory and performance problems on Nintendo Switch and resolved inconsistencies between shaders across platforms. We also handled the certification requirements for each platform’s Photon integration and user-generated content guidelines, an area where console holders apply a lot of scrutiny.
Sickhead handled all of the console ports for a near-simultaneous launch alongside the PC release. With our partners we decided to hold back the Switch release by two weeks to fix a platform-specific visual glitch rather than ship a compromised version.
